Sanders interventions into existing situations - outdoors or indoors,
affecting walls or floors - are minimal, and subtle in their effect.
These works, which are derived from the existing space in every respect,
open up surprising perspectives for viewers in terms of the place they
are in, or in relation to what a picture actually is. When the artist
covers the surface of a picture with the piece of wallpaper that was
originally behind the picture, thus inevitably obscuring it completely,
then the hidden background to the picture or the wall is shifted into
the foreground, and becomes the picture.
Sander's
works go beyond mere conceptualism and mark out remarkable intermediate
areas between things that are there and things that are not there, inside
and outside, front and back.
